Review: Boo Loves Books

Boo Loves Books is a heartwarming story of a special connection formed through reading between a girl and a dog named Big Boo.

Phoebe is the only one in her class who doesn’t enjoy reading, she worries about getting the letters, sounds and words wrong so much that her tummy does flips. When her class goes on an excursion to the animal shelter, Phoebe meets a gentle but nervous dog named Big Boo and with the support of her teacher she reads him a book.

It turns out Phoebe and Big Boo have their similar concerns in common and that they are able to help each other. Boo’s fears are eased by Phoebe’s voice and Phoebe’s fears are eased by this knowledge and her focus on helping Big Boo. Following on from this new bond, a delightful ending prevails.

I adore Tracie Grimwood’s soft, traditional illustrations, they suit the loveable characters and work in unity with the text to create a positive, supportive environment and vibe.

Boo Loves Books is a captivating story which shows some of the positive effects of reading. It would be helpful to children who are learning or nervous about reading while also suiting groups and inspiring classroom discussions.
