Review: Moonwalkers

It’s 1969 and the Apollo 11 mission has just launched, grab your foil space suit because you are about to enjoy a fabulous adventure filled with imaginative play!

Set in Parkes, NSW, Australia, Moonwalkers looks at the time when that giant leap for mankind was made. As the rocket launches, the world watches on their television screens and three days of wonder, space play, craft and games begins in Billy’s family home.

With gravity, moon rocks, telescopes and more, the story entwines between facts from the historic event and the children’s imaginative play. I loved seeing Billy, Buzz and Mickey eating astronaut ice-cream in their cosy Command Module; made with blankets, chairs and cushions. Like many others will be, my family were inspired to play out this scene in our home.

Just like in the Treehouse series, Terry Denton’s detailed illustrations drew me in, with lots to discover on every page, even after multiple reads. Billy’s lounge room is filled in a way that will be familiar to families; books, balls, blocks and contraptions all over the place in a slightly chaotic manner, while the bright green couch and decor set the era wonderfully.

There is fun for everyone in this fabulous story, parts of it made me and my children laugh out loud. I love the additional facts and the Apollo 11 Mission To the Moon diagram at the back of the book. It is perfect for teaching young children a little history and a wonderful way to celebrate one of the world’s most remarkable achievements.
