Review: Our Bush Capital

Our Bush Capital is written by Samantha Tidy and illustrated by Juliette Dudley.

It's a celebration of Australia's capital city. A place that many people call home.

Our Bush Capital shares the experiences of a young girl and the places she loves in Canberra, the things she loves to see and do.

Locals will recognise many of the sights.

Visitors will discover, through the pages of the book, a little of what it is that makes Canberra so great.

From the native birds and snow-capped Brindabella ranges, to enjoying a ride on the carousel, or on bikes in one of the nature-filled landscapes.

See if young readers can spot the residents of the National Dinosaur Museum, and the National Zoo and Aquarium. Can they name the Royal Australian Mint where our official currency is made, or the Australian War Memorial?

Canberra is more than places. It's also experiences, like the diversity of the National Multicultural Festival, the bright colours of Floriade, and the chilly dawn associated with hot air balloons.

The story is expressively told in the first person, from the young girl's perspective. The illustrations are simple in style and mostly autumnal in colour, which is fitting for a city that looks amazing with its trees full of colourful leaves during that season.

Our Bush Capital was brought to life through a crowdfunding campaign, and is deserving of a wide audience.

The aim of the creators was 'to inspire some discussion in Canberra, about how good it is to live here .... to self-reflect positively and share with one another their joy for this place.'

Our Bush Capital succeeds in doing just that.

A fantastic book for home libraries, wherever you live.
